Cops charged over 75kg drug haul


ALOR SETAR: Two policemen were jointly charged with two counts of trafficking in more than 75kg of drugs while another was slapped with a possession charge.

Bernama reported that Mohd Norhidayat Mat Din, 26, and Mohammad Rosside Rosli, 28, were indicted in a magistrate’s court here yesterday with trafficking in 75,339gm of methamphetamine on the first count and 74.21gm of heroin on the second charge.

They allegedly committed both offences at the Pendang district police headquarters at 10.10am on Jan 16. No plea was recorded from both men who face the mandatory death penalty if convicted.

In the same court, Wan Mohd Suhaimi Wan Sidek, 42, was charged with possessing 70gm of cannabis at a house in Felda Sungai Tiang, Pendang, at 8.55pm on Jan 16.

He faces a minimum five-year jail sentence and up to 10 strokes of the rotan if convicted. No plea was recorded from him.

All three policemen were unrepresented while DPP Eliana Ismail prosecuted. Magistrate Mohd Khairul Hafizuddin Ramli fixed April 6 to mention all three cases pending the chemist report.

In BUKIT MERTAJAM, two men were nabbed for impersonating policemen and trying to seize a motorcycle from a 32-year-old salesman.

The duo, aged 28 and 34, approached the victim at his workplace in Jalan Kulim here on Wednesday afternoon and identified themselves as policemen.

One of them was wearing a police vest while the other had on a black jacket.

They demanded the salesman’s motorcycle, claiming that it was used in a robbery.

The victim however became suspicious and asked for their authority card.

When they could not produce the card, he alerted the police without their knowledge.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said police rushed to the scene and detained the two men.

He said police also searched the car they arrived in and found five dangerous weapons comprising knives, a parang and a sword.

“Initial investigations revealed that they took drugs,” he said yesterday.

ACP Nik Ros Azhan said the case would be probed under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating policemen and under Section 6(1)(A) Section of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for having weapons.

“The 34-year-old suspect, from Bukit Teh here, is jobless and has criminal record for drug and theft cases, while the other suspect from Kulim is a contract worker.”
