MCA slams death threats against Bersih 2.0 chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has condemned those who made death threats against Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, describing such threats as uncivilised in a civil society.

Party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) said that no one should take the law into their own hands in a civilised society.

“Stern action must be taken against those who have violated the laws,” he said when asked to comment on the death threat sent via WhatsApp to Maria on Tuesday.

Others included in the threatening messages were Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Mandeep Karpali and Hakam president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

The threatening WhatsApp messages show digitally edited images of Maria, Ambiga, Mandeep and Maria’s three sons kneeling before a masked man as he holds a knife to their throats.

Dr Wee, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, however said that street rallies were not the only channel to voice their grouses in a democratic society.

He was speaking to reporters after flagging off a 4x4 Road and Belt Initiative entourage to China on Wednesday.

The group comprising members from the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Ka Yin Association and 4x4 Adventure Club will spend 23 days exploring southern China, Myanmar and Thailand before entering the Malaysia-Thai border to return home.
