Watson Nyambek no longer a bankrupt

MIRI: Former national sprint king Watson Nyambek, nicknamed the Flying Dayak, is no longer a bankrupt.

The Sarawak state government has settled his outstanding bank loan of RM80,000 used to pay for his cancer-stricken father’s medical expenses, Watson said Tuesday.

Watson was given another long-overdue reward - a house in Miri city from Syarikat Perumahan Nasional Bhd and Naim Holdings.

He received the mock key to a single-storey three-room terrace house in the Vista Perdana housing estate here worth RM 350,000 from SPNB and Naim Holdings. Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem was also present at the mock key presentation ceremony here on Tuesday. Naim was represented by its chairman Datuk Amar Hamid Sepawi.

Watson, who became the fastest man in Malaysia in the 100 metres sprint 18 years ago, said he was elated to have the financial burden lifted off his shoulders.

“I am grateful to Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan and the state government for helping to settle my bankruptcy case.

“I am thankful for this new house too. I am grateful that I am no longer a bankrupt,” he said.

He was declared a bankrupt last year by a bank here when he failed to pay back his loan.
