Another barricade put up at disputed logging site

GUA MUSANG: Another barricade has been set up by orang asli protesters at a disputed logging site near here.

A check by The Star showed that apart from the present Pos Tohoi-Pos Gob blockade, another barricade has been put up at Kampung Bering in Pos Pasik, about 70km from here.

A local orang asli resident from Pos Pasik, Jamal I Ayau, 29, claimed that villagers had prevented three lorries laden with logs from leaving the Balah forest reserve.

“We have a right to demand a stop to the logs leaving the area and to stop further damage to our traditional hunting grounds,” he said on Sunday.

District deputy police chief Deputy Supt Yap Sow Sin had gone to the Pos Tohoi-Pos Gob barricade with 11 policemen on Saturday but was barred from entering the area by some 200 orang asli.

DSP Yap said the villagers had refused to negotiate with police and prevented them from doing their job.

He said he did not wish to speculate but it could be that the villagers thought they were bogus cops.
