Ukraine welcomes JIT findings on MH17

PETALING JAYA: The findings of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) investigating the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 are welcomed by the Ukrainian government, said Olexander Nechytaylo, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Malaysia.

"The JIT has made significant progress, and today some questions that had been on people’s minds, especially the victims’ next of kin, have been answered. It provides clear evidence that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile, launched from the territory controlled by the Russian-backed separatist militia," said Nechytaylo.

Nechytaylo added in a press statement on Wednesday that as the investigation on the individuals involved is still ongoing, commenting on possible suspects at this stage is premature.

"t is very important that the investigators can do their work independently and thoroughly.  The criminal investigation needs the continuing support of the international community and the full cooperation of all states that are in a position to assist with the investigation and prosecution of those responsible, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2166 (2014). We can do everything possible to ensure justice is done independently, fairly and transparently," said Nechytaylo.

He added that Ukraine and Malaysia together with other JIT member-states are making progress with an effective prosecution mechanism for those responsible for the downing of MH17.

"Those who lost their loved ones must know - no matter how long it may take – we will not rest until justice for the victims of MH17 will be served," he said

MH17 was shot down by a Russian-made BUK missile fired from rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014.

All 298 on board were killed.
