A missed dinner date

GEORGE TOWN: Administration executive Joice Chin Khoon Sing was on her way to have dinner with her family when she was killed by a hook that fell from a crane and hit her car.

Her life was snuffed out a week before her 24th birthday, said her brother, Khoon Ying.

“She would have celebrated her birthday on Sept 1,” he added.

He said his sister was caught in a traffic jam on Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur when the chunk of metal crushed her car at about 7.15pm on Thursday.

“She had left her workplace in Puchong,” said Khoon Ying. “She sent me a voice message to say that she would be late and asked us to order the food first.”

He replied, telling her that the spaghetti at the restaurant was delicious and asked if she wanted him to order the dish for her.

When she did not reply his message, which was sent at 7.08pm, he assumed that she was busy concentrating on the road and said: “She was a very careful driver.”

About an hour later, the family received the devastating news.

A man called him around 8pm, using Khoon Sing’s mobile phone, saying that she had met with an accident, said Khoon Ying, 26, who is an actor using the stage name Kean.

“The man told me to go to the forensics department at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. We didn’t know what had happened until we reached the hospital,” he said.

He could not hold back his tears during the wake at the Nordin Street Ghaut flats here yesterday.

Showing a photograph of his sister dressed in a white dress, he told reporters that she had dreamt of wearing a wedding dress someday.

“She loved to joke about getting married to a Korean star,” he said, adding that his sister had high expectations about her Mr Right.

“Her husband must not smoke and cannot party or gamble,” recalling that he had jokingly told her that she would not be able to find such a man.

“She replied that if she couldn’t, she would stay with me,” he said .

Khoon Ying added that the funeral was in Penang because they grew up here and it was also the home of their grandparents.

“She was very close to our late grandmother,” he said.

The funeral is at 10am tomorrow and the cortege then leaves for the Batu Gantong Hokkien Cemetery and Cremato­rium.
