Papagomo must pay Anwar RM870,000

PUTRAJAYA: Papagomo will have to pay the RM870,000 libel damages awarded to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the Court of Appeal has rejected his bid to challenge the High Court verdict.

A three-man panel, chaired by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Justice Richard Malanjum, unanimously refused to grant leave to Papagomo to appeal.

The award was granted by a High Court over postings by the blogger, 33, whose real name is Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, who tried to implicate the PKR leader in purported indecent acts with another man.

“The application for leave is dismissed with costs as it has no merits. It is factual matrix,” said Justice Malanjum.

The other judges on the panel were Federal Court judges Justices Hasan Lah and Zaharah Ibrahim.

On Feb 28, 2014, Anwar was awarded damages by High Court judge Justice Rosilah Yop after she ruled that Anwar had proven that Wan Muhammad Azri was the blogger Papagomo and that the defamatory statements in question had referred to Anwar.

Saying Papagomo abused Internet freedom, she ordered him to pay Anwar general damages and costs.
