Mat Rempit rams cop in bid to flee roadblock

ALOR SETAR: A member of the Police Volunteer Reserve was seriously injured when he was rammed by a Mat Rempit trying to escape a roadblock during an operation in Kepala Batas near here.

Kota Setar district police chief Asst Comm Mohd Rozi Jidin said the incident occurred at a traffic light junction during Ops Samseng Jalanan at about 3.10am yesterday.

“The motorcyclist was trying to escape when he hit my men. Kons Muhammad Annas Ikmal Mior Arif Ariffin suffered a fracture on his left leg and sustained facial injuries.

“He has been warded at the Sulta­nah Bahiyah Hospital,” he said.

ACP Mohd Rozi said a 17-year-old youth from Felda Bukit Tangga, Changlun, had been arrested.

“He injured his right knee and right hand,” he said, adding that the youth was under remand for three days.

Kons Muhammad Annas said he hoped to recover soon so that he could continue serving the force.

“I felt scared after the incident. But it will not stop me from carrying out my duties,” he said, vowing to be more careful next time.

ACP Mohd Rozi said 24 policemen, inclu­ding eight police volunteers and two officers from the narcotics department, took part in the operation.

Authorities also seized 112 motorcycles and brought 132 motorists, aged between 15 and 25, back to the station.

“Sixty-six summonses were is­­sued for various offences,” he said, adding that urine tests on 29 of the motorists later turned out negative.
