Kejara system and more AES cameras later this year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kejara demerit points system will be implemented later this year, while more cameras will be added to the automatic enforcement system (AES), says Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic).

The two systems, cumulatively known as the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas), are being implemented to reduce traffic accidents and currently awaiting Cabinet approval.

Liow, the Transport Minister, said signboards would be put up to warn road users of the any speed cameras ahead.

"The systems are not meant to punish traffic offenders, but to educate and raise their awareness – and together, will make the road a safer place for all travellers," he said.

Liow was speaking to reporters after launching a road safety campaign in conjunction with Hari Raya at the Sungai Besi toll plaza Monday morning.

He said many initiatives would be taken to reduce road accidents and fatality rates this festive season.

He said the nationwide Ops Bersepadu would be held from June 29 to July 13 this year.

During this period, speed limits on Federal roads will be reduced from 90km/h to 80km/h while the maximum speed for state roads will be dropped to 70km/h, he added.

Liow also reminded the motorists and passengers to buckle up, adhere to the speed limit and follow traffic rules to ensure a safe journey.

He also warned that driving on the emergency lane constitutes an offence.
