Victim gets rude shock at police station

MALACCA: A mechanic, who went to lodge a report about an assault by two men following a traffic accident, was shocked to find out that the “attackers” were policemen attached to the same station.

Hours after Tan Chee Teik, 31, lodged a second report yesterday against the policemen, the duo were ordered by Malacca police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din to be detained.

Tan had gotten into a minor incident involving his car and another vehicle that was driven by a plainclothes policeman at a roundabout in Taman Merdeka at 2am on Wednesday.

He said he had offered to pay for the damage but the driver and his friend, also a policeman, turned aggressive and hit him with an object.

“A police vehicle arrived at the scene but they only watched as the two continued to attack me,” he added.

Later, when Tan was at the Batu Berendam station to lodge a report, he was taken aback when he saw the duo who assaulted him walk in and were greeted by their colleagues.

Two days after receiving treatment at Malacca Hospital for multiple injuries, Tan decided to lodge another report yesterday.

The case then came to DCP Ramli’s attention.

“I never expected the Malacca police chief himself to take an interest in the case but I am glad for his action,” said Tan.

DCP Ramli convened a meeting at 3pm and directed the policemen with the ranks of corporal and constable to be detained.

The two will be investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 341 for wrongful restraint.

DCP Ramli said the other two policemen at the scene, who failed to perform their duty, would also be investigated.

He added that one of the policemen involved in the assault claimed to be distressed after his father’s recent demise.

“The excuse is unacceptable. We have no right to assault anyone and I hope this will serve as a deterrent to those in the force.”
