KUCHING: A teacher and her family were stranded in a school after a suspension bridge collapsed due to floods here Sunday night.

The school, SK Ulu Budu in Saratok, had to be closed Monday as the fallen bridge provided the only connection to the school.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said that a female teacher, 35, was stranded in the school quarters with her three children and younger sister.

The teacher's husband was not at home at the time as he is currently working in Korea.

The spokesman said although the flood in the area had subsided by Monday morning, pupils could not get to school due to the fallen bridge.

He said a team from the Saratok Fire and Rescue station managed to rescue the five victims by boat at 2.30pm Monday, and were now back home in Saratok town.

The heavy rain Sunday night also caused a landslide that damaged the classrooms, he said. - Bernama
