Amendment to Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 expected to be tabled in March


KUALA LUMPUR: A proposal to amend the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 is expected to be tabled in the coming Dewan Rakyat session beginning March 7.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said the amendment, which was aimed at improving the Act, encompassed several aspects, including punishment and penalty.

He told reporters after opening Dewan Perdana Zafran here on Sunday that the Government would look at raising the fine under the Act to RM500,000 from the present RM50,000.

Jailani said the development of the communications and multimedia  would also be looked at.

Also present at the event was Dewan Perdana Zafran chairman Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay.

Jailani said a study on the amendment had been conducted in March last year an involved discussions with more than 350 stakeholders, including industry players such as Google and Yahoo. – Bernama
