Selangor and Johor have the most rape cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Although there have been reports about rape cases increasing steadily in Kelantan in the past, two other states have since gained notoriety for the highest number of rapes in the country.

Selangor and Johor have been recording the most number of rape cases in 2013, 2014 and up to October this year.

Johor and Selangor recorded 458 and 402 cases respectively in 2013.

Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division’s assistant principle director Asst Comm Jenny Ong Chin Lan said Selangor had 326 cases while Johor recorded 311 last year.

“As of October this year, these two states have the highest numbers.

“Selangor recorded 266 while Johor reported 240 cases,” she said.

ACP Ong said sexual assault cases occurred because of many factors.

“The victim, however, is definitely not to be blamed for these crimes. How a woman dresses or acts does not influence the offender’s choice of victims.”

“Sexual assault is not an impulsive or spontaneous act with the majority of these crimes carefully planned,” she said, adding that opportunity was the most important factor determining the offender’s decision to commit the crime.

In 2013, a majority of the 1,248 victims were those aged between 13 and 15.

“There were 24 victims below six years old and 42 between the ages of six and nine.

“In 2014, children between 13 and 15 years still accounted for the highest number of victims, totalling 1,086. As of October this year, 800 victims were recorded from the same age group,” she said.
