Centenarian cycles daily to keep fit

Keeping busy: Daud selling tobacco at the market to his regular customers, who are also his close friends.

KUALA TERENGGANU: It’s quite rare to meet someone living up to 100 years, let alone a centenarian who cycles daily.

A firm believer in the saying that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, the slightly built Daud Seman keeps himself occupied with light exercises and cycles daily from his home in Kampung Pak Katak here to the market where he sells tobacco.

Exercise, eating healthy and prayers were the secret to his long life, said Daud, who turned 100 early this year.

“I am always engaged in some productive activity. This has become a routine for me since I was younger when I had to do heavy menial work.

“I travel some 1km daily from my village to the market where I sell tobacco to my regular customers, who are also my close friends,” he said.

This, added Daud, gave him the chance to meet his friends and make some pocket money.

Daud has some advice for today’s youths, especially those who are into illegal motorcycle racing: they should not waste their time, but consider starting up a small business.

“If they can spend thousands to modify their machines, they can spend the money on something better instead,” he said, adding that there were many opportunities for youths.

He also advised youths not to be picky when it came to making a living.
