Kuala Lumpur: Melissa Kong, one of the fellows for “Teach for Malaysia”, recently graduated from Oxford University. But instead of pursuing a career in her field of study, Melissa volunteered to become a teacher in one of the rural Felda areas.
The 21-year-old from Kuala Lumpur is concerned for the future generations of Malaysians.
Although she has to shuttle between KL and Felda schemes, some in the most remote areas in Perak, there is little that will keep her from her goal of ensuring that children in these remote areas get the same quality of education as anywhere else.
“Teach for Malaysia” is a programme set up to provide avenues for additional learning for students with lower than average academic progress.
The programme is done in collaboration with schools with support from parents, principals and local officials and aims to bridge the gap in educational standards between urban and rural areas.
Melissa Kong believes that this will reduce the education inequity that has been prevalent in our society.
