Mawi & Ekin now husband and wife

JOHOR BARU: Popular singer Mawi married Norashikin Rahmat, better known as Ekin, at the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque here yesterday. The ceremony was telecast live on TV in the country.

The solemnisation was performed by the Imam of Datul, Mahat Mohd Said, and witnessed by Johor Baru kadi As Syeikh Husni Tamrin Md Sharif and another imam of the mosque, Mahadir Yahya.

Mawi, 27, offered a dowry of RM30,000 and mas kahwin of RM22.50, which was fixed by the Johor state government.

Mawi also presented nine trays of bridal gifts that included, besides the dowry, a copy of the Quran, a ring, a handbag, a pair of shoes, a wristwatch, a make-up set and perfume, cake and sirih junjung.

The bride’s side reciprocated with 11 trays that included a wristwatch, a pair of shoes, a wallet and a belt, praying mat and songkok, a Quran, a ring, perfume, cake, fruits, chocolates and sirih junjung.

Mawi, who wore a white baju melayu adorned with a pink, green and yellow floral printed songket, and jewellery worth more that RM67,000, perfected the ceremony by completing the lafaz at his very first attempt at about 11.40am.

The winner of the third season of Akademi Fantasia then slipped a ring onto 29-year-old Ekin’s finger and kissed her forehead. The bride donned a white baju nikah, complete with white tudung and jewellery worth more than RM72,000.
