Sultan Sharafuddin crowned ninth Ruler of Selangor

KLANG: Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, 58, was crowned the ninth Ruler of Selangor in a ceremony steeped in Malay tradition and splendour at Istana Alam Shah here yesterday. 

The ceremony in the Balairong Seri began at 9.30am with eight Penjawat Istana (bearers of royal items) taking their respective places in the throne room. 

The Royal Mufti of Selangor, Datuk Seri Utama Mohamad Tamyes Abdul Wahid placed the Royal Crown on the ruler’s head, officially anointing him the Sultan of Selangor. 

His Royal Highness pledged to rule with justice and fairness. 

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, on behalf of the Sultan’s subjects, congratulated the ruler and pledged their loyalty. 

Some 1,200 guests including royalty from the Malay states and Brunei witnessed the historic event. 

Acting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi represented the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the people of Malaysia.
