Price of vandalism

By YU JI

Kuching Amphitheater, which is between the Civic Centre and Reservoir Park, form the green lung in the urban centre. The amphitheater was converted from a golf course in the late 1980s and early 1990s. All three public areas are heavily vandalised.

VANDALISM is costing hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ money every year. Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) spent more than RM400,000 last year just to fix a portion of damaged and stolen public properties that were deemed priority. (That amount was far from enough to fix every case of vandalism or theft the city commission knew about.)

The rampant vandalism it faced was mostly caused by metal, electronics and lights theft. Visit any of Kuching’s many public parks and this is plain to see.
