Trophy stays in Malaysia

SELANGOR’S Club Aman prevented Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) from taking the Penang Sports Club International Hockey Fest challenge trophy across the causeway.

Club Aman trooped out winners 7-6 on penalties in the finals with both teams drawing 0-0 at full time.

SRC eliminated host Penang Sports Club’s Eagles a slot in the finals with a 2-0 win.

Club Aman took on National Defence University Malaysia in their semi-finals and won 1-0 on penalty after a goalless draw.

During the finals at the Penang Sports Club’s pitch in Western Road on Saturday, Club Aman veterans firmly measured up to the abilities of their Singaporean rivals.

The international challenge was so well received that all its invited teams from as far as Australia and Hong Kong turned up for the one-day event that attracted 20 local and foreign teams.

Many of the veteran participants gave their best to entertain those watching by the side.

Not even the sweltering heat stopped them from taking the field hoping to rekindle the glorious moment of their prime days.

Players like Penang’s Harcharanjit Singh, a feared striker in his youth, was there featuring as an Eagle and eager to display that he had not lost his touch, though age has caught up with him.

Hong Kong’s Kowloon Cricket Club did not to return home empty-handed. They flew home as the Bowl’s champion, beating Perth Pirates 2-1 on penalties after they had fought to a goalless deadlock at full-time.

Royal Sungai Ujong Club also ended their challenge on a consolation note when they were crowned Plate champion, beating Police Veterans by a solitary goal in the final.
