RESIDENTS living near Sungai Klang in Puchong have been waking up to a stench every morning for a year.
The smell comes from piles of rubbish strewn along a 500m stretch on both sides of the river.
Residents staying in a condominium nearby said there were also mosquitoes, flies and rats.
Recently Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han , officials from the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and the state’s Drainage and Irrigation Department team went to inspect the site.
“We have received many complaints of illegal dumping and open burning here,” said Ng.
During the visit, the group had to walk into the dumpsite instead of driving in as a boomgate was placed there recently to bar vehicles from entering.
The mountains of rubbish were mostly made up of construction waste and office materials.
Ng said some of the rubbish had spilled into the river.
“We need to take action. The other side of the river is under the Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) jurisdiction,” he said.
Gobind said stern action should be taken against those who dump waste at the site.
“We have to find a long-term solution so that this will be solved completely,” he said.
He added that the authorities should investigate incidents of open burning.
