ABOUT 1,500 people in Hulu Selangor had a splashing good time while learning to appreciate rivers during the Sungai Selangor Carnival held at Alor Lempah in Ampang Pecah, Kuala Kubu Baru.
Organised by Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS), the event saw adults, senior citizens and children taking part in activities such as the kampung breakfast, tree-planting, drawing and colouring contests as well as community sporting events.
Activities included a 1km Sungai Selangor run, tubing, a river tug-of-war, human tower, duck catching, slippery pole, pillow fight, paper boat contest, horse riding and archery as well as exhibition booths on how to protect rivers.
MDHS secretary Azman Dahlan said the activities were aimed at getting people interested in water sports while giving them an insight into the importance of keeping Sungai Selangor clean.
He added that Sungai Selangor was very important as a raw water source.
“It contributes about 60% of the drinking water for residents in the Klang Valley.
“We hope that through this event, visitors will realise the importance of Sungai Selangor and why it needs to be preserved.
“We also want the public to stop throwing rubbish into rivers as it will pollute our water sources,” said Azman.
