TEN Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) undergraduates from underprivileged families will receive scholarships to pursue their degrees, thanks to Yusuf Taiyoob Sdn Bhd.
Yusuf Taiyoob executive chairman and managing director Datuk Seri Yusuf Taiyoob said the scholarships worth RM400,000 would be given to 10 selected undergraduates to help them in their degrees.
“The financial aid is given to lessen the recipients’ burden while they pursue their studies.
“I hope with the given aid, they can focus on their studies with ease and do well,” he said after presenting the mock cheque to USM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail on Wednesday.
He also hoped that the recipients, upon succeeding, would raise their families’ economic status.
Yusuf also announced that his corporation would look into making the scholarship an annual affair.
The Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas witnessed the mock cheque presentation.
It was done during USM’s annual buka puasa programme at its Al-Malik Khalid Mosque, which saw some 2,000 students and staff including their international students break fast together.
Among the guests was Safae Laanaya, 21, from Casablanca, Morocco, who found Ramadan bazaars to be the most exciting part of the fasting month in Malaysia.
“In our country, the fasting month is all about family. We cook and break fast together.
“But here, Ramadan bazaars are something that everyone looks forward to and it’s really exciting to visit them,” she said.
Also present were USM board of governors chairman Tan Sri Dr. Zulkefli A. Hassan and USM pro-chancellor Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan.
