Online gambling activity going on behind shutters

SEVERAL online gambling dens have sprung up around Petaling Jaya’s Old Town, Section 14 and Section 11.

Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran said residents had complained about online gambling taking place behind metal shutters in the three neighbourhoods.

Rajiv said five centres were operating along Old Town’s Jalan 1/12 and Jalan 1/21, while two were along Jalan 14/14 and Jalan 14/20 and another in Jalan 11/4.

“The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has raided these places several times but they have no power to arrest the masterminds who run these places,” said Rajiv.

The assemblyman said he would write to Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din to officially request police action against the illegal online gambling dens.

Moreover, the police could request that utility companies shut off the power and water con-nections to the premises, some-thing which the city council could not do.

“Doing business without a licence is just a RM2,000 fine and the confiscated computers are easily replaced so, city council raids are not a sustainable solution,” added Rajiv.

When contacted, Asst Comm Mohd Zani said the police were continuously raiding online gambling dens in Petaling Jaya.

The police would take action if any officers were found to be frequenting such joints, he added.
