THERE will be no ban on the kapchai (small motorcycles) in the city if the public are against the idea, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said.

Clarifying the issue, he said the proposal to ban the small motorcycles would depend on public acceptance.

“Don’t worry, we will not implement the ban. I said there was only a possibility of us going ahead with the ban, not that it would be implemented,” he said on Wednesday during an event in the city.

“We will always look at it in the proper way without burdening the people.

“I know many people use this types of vehicles, especially to travel to work, because they are cheap.

“We will not do it if the people don’t want it,” he added.

Tengku Adnan reiterated that the possibility of a ban would only happen once there were cheap transportation alternatives in place.

Responding to a question by reporters on the statement by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar that it would be more appropriate to crack down on large vehicles that contribute to pollution, Tengku Adnan said: “Don’t pit me against another minister.”

Tengku Adnan had been reported on Sunday as saying the ministry was considering banningkapchai bikes as a way of cutting down on carbon emissions. He also noted that these motorcycles had been used by snatch thieves.
