ALOR SETAR: An assemblyman’s car caught fire causing him to suffer losses which he estimated to add up to some RM100,000.
Bukit Kayu Hitam assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Zaini Japar (pic) said he was not in his Mercedes-Benz E240 when the incident happened at the Kubang Pasu police station in Jitra on Sunday.
“My driver was at the police station to lodge a report over a personal matter.
“I had just sent my car for servicing last week. So, the fact that it caught fire came as a surprise to me,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Ahmad Zaini said he had bought the car five years ago.
He suspected that a faulty wiring could have sparked the fire.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Supt Nor Hafizah Mohammed Lukman said the department received a distress call at about 4.47pm.
He said five firemen arrived at the scene in a fire engine and put out the fire at about 5.26pm.
“Half the car was damaged by the fire. We are now investigating the cause,” he said.
