A SCIENCE and English fair, held by SK Convent Green Lane in Penang, drew 400 pupils and 100 teachers from 25 different schools nationwide.

Called ‘Fiesta Sister Columba’, the one-day fair was held for the second year.

Friends S. Sarmeetha and Nur Bahqis Adibah Sazali, both 11, were excited to take part in science experiments.

“This is very cool. We just learnt about the electrostatic process through balloons,” said Sarmeetha at the junior science camp session conducted by Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Phd in Science stu-dents who volunteered at the event.

Nur Bahqis was keen on makng new friends at the fair.

“I have already made a few new friends. I am also looking forward to taking part in the English station games later.

“They look like a lot of fun,” said the SK Jalan Hamilton pupil.

Another science project required the students to build a straw bridge which was strong enough to stand on its own.

The English Language station games held at 10 booths saw pupils participating in charades and other grammar-related games like ‘Stories Alive’ which challenged the participants to elaborate on a character from the list of fairy tales provided by SK Convent Green Lane.

The fair exposed the children to the different fun aspects of school subjects and promoted healthy competition.

Organising chairman and science teacher S. Jaga Jothi said the pupils enjoyed their hands-on learning experience.

The event was opened by state Education Department director Shaari Osman, who praised the school’s efforts at creating a conducive interactive environment for pupils to learn new things in a fun way.
