POLICE personnel at the Air Itam police station in Penang received a surprise when a 33-year-old antique seller brought in an old bomb, believed to be from World War 2.
The man claimed to have found the object in a black plastic bag in August near the Air Itam Dam.
He surrendered the bomb to the police on Thursday after being advised by a friend.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the bomb was identified as an illuminating mortar shell and was inactive.
“Our Bomb Disposal Unit has confirmed that the mortar was left behind during the World War 2 and was meant for illumination, not for destruction.
“They then brought the mortar to an open space in Bukit Gambir to detonate it,” he said, adding that the procedure was carried out safely.
