The comics will be set between episodes IV and V.
In a release, Marvel and Lucasfilm announced the forthcoming release of three new comics set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. The first of these illustrated adventures will be published in January 2015.
After announcing plans for multiple spin-off features several months ago, Lucasfilm struck while the iron was hot at Comic-Con to announce three new comics series based on its signature franchise. These new illustrated adventures will focus on the “classic” characters and will be titled simply Star Wars, Darth Vader and Princess Leia. All three will pick up where Episode IV left off and will attempt to shed light on some of the questions left unanswered by Episode V.
Star Wars, an ongoing series set to debut in January 2015, will be written by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday.
“Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, the droids, and Darth Vader all get big moments in this first arc, and that’s our core cast going forward,” said Aaron in conversation with StarWars.com. But the writer indicated that Luke Skywalker will most likely be the main protagonist: “I’m really excited by the fact that Luke is in this position where he’s still a guy who’s just fresh off the farm. He was able to blow up the Death Star and do this amazing thing, but he has no idea where to go from here.”
The second comic, Star Wars: Darth Vader, will drop its first issue in February, launching an ongoing series focusing on the Empire and on the iconic villain in particular.
“Vader is the sole survivor of the greatest military disaster of all time. A disaster he isn’t entirely to blame for, but at least some of the blame is his,” said writer Kieron Gillen. “So there’s an implied sense that Vader might not be in the Emperor’s best graces at this point in the story.”
Finally, in March, Star Wars: Princess Leia will explore the heroine’s rise to power within the Alliance at a time when her entire world has just been destroyed.
