The question of where Malaysians would be spending their New Year’s Eve is answered by a survey.

MALAYSIANS want to spend New Year’s Eve in Bangkok according to Agoda.com’s Travel Smart survey. The Malaysian results were derived from a global survey conducted online in November, which looked at the choice of over 1,000 Malaysian travellers on where they’d like to celebrate the New Year’s from among 24 foreign destinations.

The City of Angels with 13.2% of total vote, is followed closely by Singapore (11.6%), Taipei (11.5 %), Bali (10.9 %), and Hong Kong (9.8 %), which make the top five destinations where Malaysians want to spend New Year’s Eve at. Filling up the 6th to 10th spots are Tokyo (7.4%), London (5.7 %), Sydney (4.9 %), Paris (4.7 %), and New York (4.4 %) respectively.

Interestingly, Singapore and Taipei were a mere 0.1% of votes apart, indicating an increasing interest in the Taiwanese metropolis as a holiday destination among Malaysians. All top five destinations, or 57% of total vote, went to destinations around the region, as opposed to other European or North American destinations.

When asked who they wanted to spend New Year’s Eve with, an impressive 60.2% of Malaysian respondents chose family, and a 20.5% chose friends. Only 14.3% would prioritise their significant other for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Five percent of respondents said they would prefer to celebrate solo.

Most Malaysian travellers (69.3%) also indicated that they would prefer to be out on New Year’s Eve, favouring private parties with friends and loved ones over big outdoor parties with large crowds (39.3% and 29.9% respectively).

It also appears that Malaysian travellers generally love to celebrate, as only 7.9% of respondents said they would be in bed asleep before the clock chimed midnight.
