First Ubuntu Touch smartphone due before 2015

Mozilla, with its Firefox OS, isn't the only player aiming to offer a reliable, competitive and affordable alternative to Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Ubuntu Touch, the mobile operating system developed by Canonical, will make its debut this December on a version of the forthcoming Meizu MX4 smartphone, according to a post on the Chinese manufacturer's Italian blog.

The alternative mobile OS will come installed on a version of the Chinese brand's new smartphone, which will otherwise be offered with Android. This means the Meizu MX4 will be the first phone to be sold with Ubuntu Touch, which tech-savvy users can already install on certain devices at their own risk.

In theory, the Ubuntu Touch mobile OS is compatible with any screen of between 6 and 20 inches with a resolution of between 100 and 450ppi. The system's built-in apps include a photo manager, a music player and maps. A developer's version was unveiled in February 2013.

The Meizu MX4 is expected to go on sale this December, priced from €339 (around RM1,415) in Europe for the 16GB version. —Reuters 2014
