Taiwanese sisters to face off in Malaysian Open final

KUALA LUMPUR: The sibling rivalry between two Taiwanese will be put to test when top seeds Timea Babos-Chan Hao-ching take on Chan Yung-jan-Zheng Saisai in the women’s doubles final of the BMW Malaysian Open at the Royal Selangor Golf Club on Sunday.

Taiwan’s Yung-jan and her partner from China, Saisai, checked into the final on Saturday with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 win over Ukrainians Lyudmyla Kichenok-Olga Savchuk on a day when rain again played havoc with the fixtures, causing a delay of more than three hours.

Before the sky opened up, Yung-jan-Saisai, who are playing together for the first time, struggled to get their game going and lost 4-6 in the opening set.

They got their act right in the second set, winning it 6-4 to force a third set – just before the downpour. The long wait did not seem to affect Yung-jan-Saisai as they went about wrapping up the match with an astounding 10-4 win in a tie-breaker.

The 24-year-old Yung-jan, the elder sister of Hao-ching, is eyeing her second Malaysian Open title after winning it in 2010 with Zheng Jie.

“I will be facing my younger sister ... it will tough but interesting,” she quipped.

Asked if she had played against her 20-year-old sister before and who won it, she replied: “We played against each other in the East Asian Games in the mixed doubles before ... but is it important to know who won?”

“My youngser sister won but I will try to go for my second title here. I’m playing with Zheng for the first time but we complement each other because we talk about our game very often ... and that helps.”

The sisters will resume their partnership after the Malaysian Open and Yung-jan was quick to add: “She will always be my partner ... sometimes we team up with different players from other nations because it suits our schedule and plan.”
