KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no exposure trip for athletes at the Incheon Asian Games next month.
And the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) selection committee, which meets on Wednesday, have been asked to abide strictly by this guideline.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said they will only consider athletes who have the chance to fight for medals and in the case of potential young prospects, they must at least be ranked among the top rung in their age-group.
“We used to accept athletes under category B on the basis to expose them. But we cannot treat the Asian Games as an exposure and must make sure we have good quality in the contingent.
“There are some sports that we feel could be making the numbers and they have until tomorrow to justify why they deserve to be in Incheon.
“Their personal best is not good enough and they must show they are ranked among the top in the continent,” said Khairy.
OCM will meet to finalise the squad but they have until Aug 15 to submit the names to the Incheon organisers.
Khairy added they have also decided the 2011-2014 programme of preparation for athletes to go through an independent audit.
”It will be done after the Asian Games and we will get the sports experts to do it, including from overseas, if necessary.”
Malaysia achieved their best ever performance in Asian Games in history in Guangzhou four years ago with 9-18-13.
