JOHOR BARU: Newcomers Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar (MSAB) handed Kluang a 5-1 beating to win the Johor Under-16 hockey title at the Johor Baru AstroTurf Stadium here on Sunday.
MSAB, who are better known as English College, also walked away with three other awards. Skipper Mohd Ezwan Esa was the topscorer with 10 goals, centrehalf Abdul Aziz Salim was named the tournament’s best player and rightwinger Mohd Razali Surip was named the Man-of-the-Match in the final.
However, Pontian goalkeeper Abdul Hadi Abdul Aziz prevented a clean sweep of titles when he took the best goalkeeper award.
It was Ezwan who got things going for his team in the final by opening accounts in the 10th minute with a well-executed reverse flick.
It was the start of a five-minute spell that saw MSAB seal the match in the heavy downpour.
In the 12th minute, Azhar Zulkifli made it 2-0 when he picked up a long ball on the right and worked his way into the D before firing a rising shot past Kluang goalkeeper Abdul Malik Ramlan.
Malik was beaten again three minutes later when Razali flicked home past a sea of legs.
Three minutes into the second-half, Muhammad Faris Shah Musa made it 4-0 from a penalty corner set-piece.
MSAB then took their foot off the pedal, allowing Kluang to pull one back through Mohd Farid Ibrahim in the 45th minute.
Abdul Aziz, however, restored the four-goal advantage in the 55th minute.
