Fatehah Mustapa (front) en route to winning the gold in the keirin race in the third leg of the South-East Asian Track Grand Prix at the Cheras Velodrome on May 16, 2014.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian track cyclist Fatehah Mustapa is looking forward to a fruitful outing at the Asian Cycling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, from May 21-June 1.
Fatehah, who holds the distinction of being the only Malaysian woman to win a UCI Track World Cup medal, snatched the gold medal for keirin in the third leg of the South-East Asian Track Grand Prix at the Cheras Velodrome on Friday.
The Guadalajara Track World Cup keirin silver medallist exacted sweet revenge over Virginie Cueff of France in the keirin final on Friday. In the first leg on Sunday, Fatehah finished second to Cueff in keirin.
While the track cyclists are aiming to peak at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games (July 23-Aug 3) and Incheon Asian Games (Sept 19-Oct 4), Fatehah said doing well at the Asian Championships is important for qualification to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“I’m happy to win the gold medal today and I’m looking forward to the Asian Championships.
“It will be a different ball game in Astana because I expect strong riders from China and Hong Kong to pick up Olympic qualification points.
“Although I’m still far from my best, I would love to finish on the podium to collect more points,” said Fatehah, who won gold for sprint and silver for keirin at the last Asian Championships in India.
Meanwhile, Muhd Edrus Yunos continued his mercurial rise as he grabbed his fourth gold medal in the GP after winning the men’s keirin.
Edrus, who won the sprint gold medals in all three legs of the GP, scored an impressive win in keirin on Friday leaving compatriot Josiah Ng several bike lengths behind for the silver medal.
“When I made my move forward at the final bend, I looked up at the LCD screen and saw that I was several bike lengths ahead of the others.
“From then on I was really confident that I had the gold medal in the bag,” said Edrus.
