Bersih Volkswagen vandalised

PETALING JAYA: A classic Volkswagen Beetle that was used to promote the upcoming Bersih 4 rally, has been splashed with acid and sprayed with red paint.

Bersih 2.0 committee member Mandeep Singh claimed the vandals also cut the fan belt and punctured two of its tires.

Mandeep said he and his Bersih colleagues, Wong Chin Huat and Thomas Fann were to travel in the car to promote the rally on Saturday morning, only to find out that the car was vandalised.

"We were supposed to travel together in that car. Now the car is at a workshop to be repaired," he said.

The vehicle, which belongs to Fann, was vandalised when it was parked at Taman Molek, Johor during a Bersih tour in the state.

Photos of the car showed that the paint peeled off due to acid with obscene four-letter words sprayed on the car.

Mandeep said Bersih would still use the car for their nationwide roadshow albeit the "new look".

"We want to show to the people that we are not afraid of this kind of intimidation," he said.

For now though, the committee will use a classic yellow Mini Cooper as their official car for their roadshow.

Fann said his staff lodged a police report at the Taman Johor Jaya police station on Saturday morning.

Bersih will have its fourth rally in Kuala Lumpur and selected states on August 29 and 30 despite a police ban.
