Johor Ruler donates RM1mil for Sabah quake victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar of Johor showed his compassion yet again, this time by lending a big helping hand to victims of the Sabah earthquake.

The Johor ruler gave RM1mil to the State Disaster Relief Fund Committee to help with recovery efforts involving the tragedy.

The Sultan met Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman at his residence here yesterday to hand over the personal donation.

He expressed his sadness over the tragic loss of lives in the incident.

In a statement, Musa said he was touched by the Sultan’s concern for the people’s plight.

“The state government and Sabahans are grateful to the Sultan. We are moved by his concern and thoughtfulness, as he has also held special hajat prayers in Johor for the victims,’’ he said, adding that the RM1mil contribution meant a lot at this trying time.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake last Friday claimed 18 lives, including seven children.

At the time of the earthquake, 277 people, including 187 climbers, were on Mount Kinabalu.

The Sultan’s contribution is the latest in a long series of philanthropic acts by him, which included the setting up of the RM10mil Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation and RM1mil to start the Sultanah Fatimah Foundation for the needy.
