Sabah quake: Penang to donate RM100,000 to victims

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government plans to donate RM100,000 in aid of victims affected by the earthquake that struck Sabah on Friday.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic) said the proposal would be raised at the executive council meeting next week as a sign of solidarity, sympathy and support for victims of the disaster.

"I want to express my condolences to the families of those killed. The loss of life, especially for those who climbed up Mount Kinabalu, is something very sad," he told reporters after presenting prizes to winners of the Komtar Tower Run 2015, here on Sunday.

Lim said the donation will be passed to an elected representative in Sabah to be distributed to the affected victims.

Yesterday, 11 bodies were found in the Mount Kinabalu region, bringing the number of victims to 13, while six climbers are still missing.

In the 7.15 am incident on Friday (June 5), an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Ranau in Sabah, making it the strongest earthquake ever experienced in Malaysia.

The tremors caused by the moderate earthquake were also felt in areas such as Tambunan, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud. - Bernama
