Bank Negara begins its own probe

PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara has started its probe into 1MDB. It says the fund was not accorded special treatment in its operations.

It will issue a legal directive to obtain information from 1MDB and investigate all the fund’s overseas investments and offshore borrowings. However, Bank Negara’s scope to investigate does not extend to offences like fraud, tax evasion, corruption or criminal breach of trust.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said it would scrutinise the breakdown given by the fund’s president Arul Kanda.

“We are going to ask about these figures (and see) whether they are verified, and if Deloitte & Co had done checks, when they meet us on June 10,” said PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed yesterday.

Meanwhile, PAC deputy chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw said it was unacceptable that Arul gave his explanation through the media when he should be explaining to the PAC directly. “We need him to talk to us.”
