KOTA KINABALU: The forced lockdown of Penampang Baru saw two men, believed to be suspected robbers, shot dead and a woman arrested in a shootout with police some 6km from here  on Thursday.

However, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman will not release details of the incident at a press conference as investigations were ongoing.

It is learnt that police had tailed the men before stopping them in front of some shop houses in the 4pm incident.

Witnesses said they heard several gunshots lasting about a minute and people were fleeing in all directions.

More police personnel were summoned to the scene and several roads were cordoned to facilitate the investigations.

Sources said the two dead men might be involved in recent robberies around the state capital and Penampang.

Earlier in the day, Jalaluddin said two people were assisting police in an attempted robbery case in Penampang on Monday.
