PUTRAJAYA: The combined force of seven ministries under Ops Mega has managed to reduce dengue hotspots in Selangor from 92 to 86, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin said this was achieved by increasing dengue control activities from between 20% and 30% to between 50% and 60%, especially in localities under the local authorities.
Ops Mega, which was launched on July 14 to reduce the number of dengue cases by 60% to 80% through activities such as increasing rubbish collection, would continue until next month, he added.
“The operation involves 267 dengue control personnel under the Health Ministry from eight states. The Home Ministry is also providing 528 personnel from its various agencies to assist in the operation,” he said in a statement after chairing the second meeting of the National Committee on Dengue here yesterday. Also present at the meeting was Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
Muhyiddin said out of the 644 constructions sites in the Klang Valley and Seremban, 144 were checked since the launch of the operation.
“Forty-one compounds were issued to sites where aedes were found breeding while another 29 were ordered to close down under the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975.
“The shut-down orders were for cleaning activities,” he said, adding that dengue education and health advocacy were also intensified with an extra allocation of RM5mil.
He also said that between January and Aug 9, 59,790 dengue cases were reported nationwide with 123 deaths.
Selangor recorded the highest number of dengue cases with 31,754 and 49 deaths, followed by Kelantan (6,885 cases and 12 deaths) and Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (4,736 and 11 deaths).
