Armed men stop process to pump water from ponds into Sungai Selangor

KLANG: A group of armed men on Sunday threatened security staff at the Hybrid Off River Augmentation System (Horas) facility in Bestari Jaya causing a five-hour delay in pumping water from ponds into Sungai Selangor.

Selangor executive councillor for infrastructure and public amenities, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, called the action by the group an act of sabotage.

The incident resulted in a delay in pumping 70 million litre per day (MLD) of water into the Sungai Selangor to meet the falling water reserves at dams.

"In the 3am incident, the security personnel left the place due to safety reasons," Ahmad Yunus said in a statement.

He said a police report had been lodged and hoped the police would increase patrol in the area.

"The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) and Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) are in the midst of carrying out works to pump water to ensure raw water supply during the Aidilfitri season is not affected," he said.

The Horas project, developed by the state government in Kampung Sungai Darah, Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, is expected to increase raw water supply for the benefit of consumers in the Klang Valley during drought.
