Man pulled over for speeding, then held for trying to bribe cops

PETALING JAYA: A distributor of prayer items was arrested after he tried to bribe his way out of a speeding ticket along the North-South Expressway.

Federal traffic police chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said the incident occurred at around 11.10am on Wednesday.

“The 33-year-old man was heading south in a BMW 5 Series when police attempted to stop him.

“He picked up speed and ignored the gestures of my personnel,” he said, adding that they called for back-up and managed to stop the car on the highway near Simpang Renggam.

He said police explained to the man that he was stopped for having a fancy number plate and failing to stop when police initially ordered him to do so.

“This was when the man attempted to bribe the policemen with RM100.

“They warned him three times not to do so but he persisted, leaving them no choice but to arrest him,” he said, adding that the man was taken to the Yong Peng police station.

SAC Mohd Fuad said a police report was lodged and the man was taken to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Batu Pahat for further action.

“I advise the public not to attempt to bribe the police.

“If you are brave enough to commit an offence, you should be brave enough to pay the fine,” he said, adding that action would be taken against anyone who attempted to bribe traffic police personnel under the MACC Act 2009.
