7,000 parking bays for urban rail stations

KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 7,000 parking bays at various urban rail stations in the Klang Valley will be ready by 2016.

The parking bays are among measures, including park-and-ride facilities at selected stations, to integrate the public transport system with private car use, Deputy Transport Minister Abd Aziz Kaprawi said when opening the Urban Public Transportation 2014 seminar here yesterday.

He said the stations where the park-and-ride facilities would be located are the LRT station at Kelana Jaya, the ERL station at Salak Tinggi, the MRT station at Sungai Buloh and the KTM stations at Klang, Rawang and Nilai.

Abd Aziz said the 7,000 parking bays came together with the opening of the LRT extension, due to completed by next year, and the first phase of the MRT line that was expected to be completed in 2017.

He added that the Government was also looking into building more parkway drop-zones to get more people to use cars and trains together.

“People can car pool (at these drop-zones) or hop on a bus or train to get to their final destination,” he said.

Abd Aziz said the Government was looking at creating travel that is “as seamless as possible”, adding that these parking facilities would help to do this.
