More halal products sought for China

BERA: Malaysia, which has delivered more than 1,000 types of halal products to China, is encouraged to sell more items following the increasing demand in that country.

This would be a boon to entrepreneurs in Malaysia dealing with agro-based food products, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the market in China has room for more than 3,000 types of halal products from Malaysia.

“Despite their needs, we can only deliver about 1,000 types this year,” he told reporters after launching an entrepreneurial road show at Dataran Kerayong here yesterday.

Ismail Sabri added that with the support of the Government, its agencies and the entrepreneurs themselves giving their commitment, Malaysia can work towards fulfilling the increasing need for halal products in the China market.

He said a trade mission from his ministry recently clinched an agreement for Malaysia to supply more halal foodstuff in stages to China.

“That is good news to us but we must have a commitment to ensure continuous supply without compromising product quality.”

He added that Xi’an, the capital of western China’s Shaanxi province, will be the gateway to enter China’s vast halal market through the local San Bao Shuangxi halal products supermarket chain.

“It will distribute the halal products from us to other territories in China,” Ismail Sabri said.

He said Malaysia will open up an Agro Bazaar in Arab Street, Singapore, next month, to sell halal food products and local fruits, including durians of the Musang King variety.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to open the bazaar on June 26.
