BENTONG: A double-decker express bus with 67 passengers skidded while negotiating a corner at KM11 Jalan Bentong-Raub and crashed into a pole, killing an African and his pregnant Malaysian wife, and another person.

Ten people were injured, including bus driver Wan Khairul Affendi Wan Mustafa, 35, in the 12.30am incident yesterday.

The dead are Somalian Saeed Mohamad Mohamud Abdalla, 31, his wife Zarifah Alias, 26, and another passenger, Suhaisam Che Abdulla, 33, from Kampong Sungai Masin, Batang Kali, Selangor.

According to Muhammad Zaki Othman, 29, who is a friend of Saeed, Zarifah was four months pregnant.

Bentong OCPD Supt Mohamad Nor Mansor said Saeed and his wife, from Kampung Padang Jeman Salor in Kota Baru, were students at the UTM campus in Kuala Lumpur.

“The three bodies have been sent to Bentong Hospital for post-mortem while the injured were brought to the Temerloh and Bentong hospitals for treatment,” Supt Mohamad Nor said via SMS.

He said the bus, which was heading to Kota Baru from Kuala Lumpur, was allowed to carry 69 people, including the driver.

The others who were injured are Siti Nabila Mohd Nasir, 23, Tuan Rosnani Tuan Mohd Din, 22, Mamalutfee (a Thai), Wan Muhamad Husin Abdullah, 54, Faizah Abdullah, 89, Ruwaidi Jusuh, 35, Nur Sazren Fazhera Mohd Shanif, 20, Norzamera Abd Manaf, 24, and Low Wan Yi, 23.

Housewife Norzamera said she was sleeping with her two-year-old daughter, Nurqasih Qaisara Mohd Rizwan, when the accident happened. When she woke up she found herself in an ambulance heading to the hospital.

“The back of my neck was bleeding and my hands were aching.

“My first concern was the safety of my daughter. Thank God, she is safe with no injuries at all,” she added from her ward bed.

Ruwaidi Jusuh of Tenanga Nasional Berhad said he had to crawl out with the other survivors through the airwell of the bus and had to wait for about an hour for his turn to be in the ambulance.

Ruwaidi, who had completed a one-week course in Bangi, Selangor, was on his way back to Kota Baru.

“I was seated at the top deck, and I saw the bus swaying when approaching a corner before it hit the electric pole,” he said.
