The satellite image of an object in the Indian Ocean released by China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry of National Defence.
PETALING JAYA: The Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia has informed Malaysia that their satellites have picked up an image of a floating object in the Indian Ocean along the Southern Corridor search area.
The object spotted by Chinese satellites is 22.5m wide and 13m long.
"I do not have any more details, let me investigate further and I will inform you," said acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
He said that China would hold a press conference later to reveal more information.
In BEIJING, the Chinese State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry of National Defense said its Gaofen-1 satellite captured the image.
It said the newly-detected object was located at coordinates 44°57'E, 90°13'S, about 120km in a southwesterly direction from the location where Australia spotted other possible debris.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said further analysis and verification was needed to ascertain if the floating object was related to the missing aircraft.
"China has already relayed this information to Malaysia and Australia, and hope that the data will aid the search and rescue operation.
"Our rescue team is now heading to the south Indian Ocean to begin the search and rescue mission.
"China is willing to continue co-operating closely with all parties, sharing relevant information and taking part in the search and rescue operation," Hong said in a statement on the ministry's website.
