KUALA LUMPUR: If you have finished SPM and want to make a difference, consider joining a programme that helps others learn English and computer skills for free.
Called SOLS ChangeMaker, the programme is open to those aged between 17 and 28, and who scored a minimum grade B in English.
“To be a changemaker, participants will undergo a two-month training which includes free accommodation and food,” said international director and co-founder of Science of Life Studies 24/7 (SOLS 24/7) Raj Ridvan Singh.
“This is before they embark on a six-month stint to teach in a community closest to their home,” Raj said, adding that while the community learns for free, participants will be paid a RM500 monthly allowance.
Raj said a large number of Malaysians were not fluent in English, and that hinders them from getting better jobs.
“Through education, we are trying to give others hope and help them break out of poverty,” he added.
During training, participants will learn to teach English, and be taught software encoding, graphic design and others. Upon completing the programme, participants could secure a job with SOLS 24/7 with a monthly salary of RM1,500, as well as get a free smartphone and laptop.
These changemakers will then teach English and basic computer literacy at 25 training centres nationwide, including Kuala Lumpur, Sabah, Johor, Pahang and Perak.
The centres were jointly set up by SOLS 24/7 and the Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF) to carry out Project 100, which aims to alleviate poverty and spread awareness on education via free English classes.
BMF, set up by philantrophist Tan Sri Vincent Tan, receives and administers funds for medical, charitable and educational purposes.
