During the one-hour TV programme, he also urged the party leaders at all levels to not only depend on face-to-face communication in approaching the grassroots members but to also use new channels like the social media which had a wider coverage.

"Many changes had been made during the leadership of (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and we did not see the existence of a gap between the old and new generations.

"During Najib's (current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) time now, we see that the communication methods to reach out to the public are different.

"Age is perhaps a factor, but a new style and approach should be used by Umno for it to remain relevant. As Umno is the backbone of Barisan Nasional, it must adapt to current needs and situations," he said.

He also said that the transformation that was to take place in Umno, should not only focus on the physical aspects but spiritual satisfaction as well so that the members would remain loyal to the party.

Reportedly, Ahmad Zahid's firmness in fighting crime, as home minister, has made him the strongest candidate for the vice-president post.

However, he said, he did see his cabinet post as an advantage for him in the contest, but stressed that he was only doing what he had to do under the circumstances.

"When I was entrusted with carrying out the agenda of reducing crime, I gave
my commitment and was determined to see the people's safety protected. This (home minister post) is not an opportunity but a very big challenge that I have to shoulder).

"If popularity can be translated into votes in the party elections this Saturday, I will nevertheless be happy with the support given (by the delegates)," he said.

Asked why the delegates should choose him as party vice-president, Ahmad Zahid said: "I am offering myself for the post as I don't want to be a seasonal leader. It should not be the case when there's an election, only then will one be eager to meet the delegates.

"When we undertake responsibilities, we need to think that our position lies with the delegates. It's not wrong for us to go and meet them as they have given us their trust and will feel appreciated. I am not gifting the grassroots but building friendship."

Ahmad Zahid said the party delegates should listen to their inner voice in making their decisions (in the upcoming party elections).

At the same time, he said, the delegates should be respected as they had the power to determine who were the most qualified to take this sacred Malay political party to greater heights. - Bernama
