Four to contest Umno deputy Youth chief post

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Umno Youth personalities will be vying to be its deputy chief, and movement head Khairy Jamaluddin has promised not to get in their way.

He said he would not show favour to any of them to ensure a fair contest for the post, which will be vacated by incumbent Datuk Razali Ibrahim due to the age factor.

Among the aspiring candidates are current Umno Youth exco members Jamawi Jaafar, Mohd Iruan Zulkefli and Lokman Nor Adam. The fourth contender is Perak Umno Youth chief Khairul Azwan Harun.

Razali, a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, will turn 43 next month, surpassing the eligibility age of 40, to go for any post in the Youth wing.

“I endorse all of them and they are my good friends. They have all promised to contest in the spirit of family and with integrity,” he said after chairing the movement’s exco meeting here yesterday.

Meanwhile, he said Umno Youth had officially endorsed the candidacy of Razali and three others from its ranks to contest for supreme council positions in the main Umno body.

The other three are Umno Youth information chief Datuk Reezal Merican and exco members Datuk Sohaimi Shahadan and Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz.

On another matter, Khairy, who is Youth and Sports Minister, said the movement wanted the Government to introduce measures to cushion the effects of the recent petrol price hike on medium and low-income earners.

“We hope to see measures announced in the 2014 Budget.”

The movement also urged the Government to act on issues such as cost cutting and breaking the monopoly of some approved permit holders on certain food items.
