Once a nasi lemak stall by the road in Kelana Jaya, Heritage Village is today the recipient of The Star People’s Food Awards for the Best Nasi Lemak category.

A popular eatery, Heritage Village in Paradigm Mall has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

Heritage Village director Edmund Soon said their nasi lemak was popular with the LRT commuters 12 years ago in Kelana Jaya, where his mother first set up stall.

The most nasi lemak is the jumbo sized King Combo.

They later moved into a shop and finally opened their first eatery in Aman Suria, and has steadily gathered a legion of fans.

Today, the company has three restaurants, located in Paradigm Mall, Publika and Jaya Shopping Centre.

Soon said he had not expected the award but was grateful to his customers for nominating the restaurant.

“ I did not know about it until customers showed me the contest and our entry on their digital devices,” he said.

With a total of 38 endorsements, the eatery won the award for November with a staggering 313 votes on Metro Online Broadcast’s (MOB) website at www.mob.com.my

The other top contenders were Ketam Nasi Lemak (205 votes), Village Park Restaurant (165 votes), Chong Hwa Restaurant (123 votes), Simply Noodles (108 votes), Nasi Lemak Kukus Kangkung FAM (90 votes) and Nasi Lemak Bumbung (90 votes).

The secret to his success, he said, was in the original nasi lemak recipe from his mother’s side of the family, who hail from Penang.

“The secret is in the rice that is steamed twice to maintain its fluffiness,” he explained.

They have about 12 to 15 varieties of nasi lemak with typical Nyonya dishes including chicken or beef rendang, sambal sotong, sambal udang, inche kabin (Nyonya fried chicken) and assam prawns.

The most popular dish, however, is the jumbo sized King Combo — a large plate of aromatic nasi lemak served with quarter-size chicken rendang, a serving of sambal sotong, Acar Awak and Keropok Ikan, as well as the usual condiments.

Soon plans to reward his customers for their support and endorsement but has yet to finalise the details.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Food Corporation Sdn Bhd sales manager Cheah Kok Teong said he was glad the Jasmine Rice sponsorship was associated with a food place such as Heritage.

A Penang boy himself, Cheah said he enjoyed the Nasi Lemak Assam Prawn as it reminded him of the island.

“I can taste the original flavour of the Penang Assam Prawn and I love it.

“We are happy to sponsor an award that helps identify winners like these,” he added.
